I joined the PTTGV in 2004. I served as the President of the PTTGV from 2017 to 2019.
I was always fascinated when the piano tuner visited, doing wonders on our home pianos. And after attending a technical school I realised early on that working with my hands was always a natural progression for job satisfaction. Shortly after leaving a music degree in 2001 a family member introduced me to David Morgan, a local old-school tuner from a time of apprenticeships and large workshops. He was happy to put me to work on repetitive action repairs and tuning up pianos following a re-stringing. Over the coming years he continued to help me to have instruments to practise on.
I became a provisional member of the PTTGV in about 2004. And was very lucky to be able to spend time with Guild members as mentors. I have many members to thank for where I am today, and I will always be grateful. Sadly two of these technicians have now passed away. They kindly came to my house to hear tunings and offer advice, and others helped me with the small details involved with the fine procedures of servicing and repairs.
After many years of hard work I was able to pass my A.R.P.T exams which opened new opportunities. I have since completed a number of technician courses with a high quality German-American piano manufacturer.
Born into a family of musicians I was introduced to the piano from the very beginning. Competing in piano competitions from the age of 7. This started a love of the instrument which continues today. But as I got older I really wanted to escape the practice room.
I joined the Guild after Paul Smith encouraged me to become a provisional member. Since then I haven't looked back. I have had numerous opportunities to attend workshops on most piano brands.
I enjoy the fact that we have an industry of independent technicians who service a whole spectrum of different instruments.
It is extremely satisfying to be working with musicians, making improvements to all pianos to enable them to sing fine music, and hearing a concert pianist perform on a piano you have prepared.
